Lyon & Healy Style C
Lyon & Healy Style C #1739, ca. 1923. $2,800.
Here's a vintage Style C carved-top acoustic mandolin from Lyon & Healy of Chicago, among the finest carved mandolins ever produced.
The pickguard bears the 11-12-18 patent date. The decorative tailpiece cover is present and in fine shape. It has the "art deco" headstock and "classical" 13-inch scale length as well as the mid-1920s Lyon/Washburn label; the serial number is written there and also stamped inside on the rim.
The mandolin comes with its original purple-lined hardshell case. It has been used but not abused over the past 101 years: typical player wear and small nicks and scratches, but no cause for alarm. It has a fresh setup and a recent check by a luthier, who confirmed that it's problem-free and ready to make more music. it has the typical dry yet sweet Lyon & Healy tone and is ideal for classical or folk styles.
Spruce top; 2-piece birdseye maple back and sides; mahogany neck; ebony bridge; vulcanized fiber pickguard and neck center strip. Single-ply white binding on back; double-ply white/black binding on top and soundhole, with additional triple-ply black/white/black soundhole ring. 13-inch scale extended fretboard with 24 frets.
