Here is a fine 1921 Sheraton brown Gibson K1 mandocello in excellent
condition. Bound spruce top;
birch back and sides; mahogany neck; ebony fretboard and headplate.
The serial number is 66244 and the factory order number
is 11400, both indicating late 1921.
This mandocello appears to have all its original hardware, including pickguard and bracket, tailpiece, endpin, nice arrow-end tuners, and an early adjustable bridge. It also has a custom-made armrest on the bass side that attaches at the bridge and the tailpiece—a convenient spot to plant your wrist while playing. Action at the 12th fret is 11/64", although there is room to lower the adjustable bridge.
There's no sign of any damage or repair, except that the pickguard is slightly warped. As with any good Gibson mandocello, this one growls like a grizzly. Powerful tone and tremendous presence.
