The Pentalin is the brainchild of electric mandolinist extraordinaire Alex Gregory, and dates from around 1996. Alex conceived of an entire family of 5-string instruments tuned in fifths and sought a licensing arrangement with BC Rich, but in the end only six prototypes were built. Here is one of them.
Extended 29-fret neck with custom scale. THe headstock has the beginnings of Alex's multiplanar design: the C string is set back further than the other strings to increase the break angle at the nut, which was Alex's method to optimizes string tension and combat "floppy C disease." Gold hardware. Single-coil pickup, tone and volume controls. Maple body and neck, ebony fretboard. The body and custom flame paint job match some of the guitars BC Rich was building at the time. Custom-made G&G hardshell case.
My luthier repaired some shipping damage and leveled the frets. This Pentalin is ready to rock. $3,000 plus shipping. 48-hour approval period. See more photos, call 425/772-0231, or for more information.
