Carl Martin (1906–79)
Mandolinist/guitarist and lead vocalist for Martin, Bogan, and Armstrong, the influential African-American string band that recorded in the 1930s and reunited in the '70s. Pictured here with a Harmony, Martin also used a Gibson A4 with a DeArmond pickup (below). Years after Martin and guitarist Ted Bogan died, their bandmate, Howard "Louie Bluie" Armstrong, continued performing on mandolin and fiddle. Armstrong died in 2003 at the age of 96.
