Framus mandola
Framus 8-string mandola. $1,050.
From 1960s Germany comes this surprisingly elegant electric mandola. Disparaging remarks about Framus instruments are easy to find, but I have to tell you, those who make such remarks have never played this Framus. It is set up perfectly, plays like a dream, and has wonderful smooth tone.
Sunburst finish, solid body, maple neck, single pickup, tone and volume controls, white plastick pickguard—everything appears to be original and in tip-top condition. What'll drive you nuts is the tailpiece cover—you may well have to unscrew this thing (and it's held on by multiple screws) every time you want to change strings. On the other hand, with an instrument this remarkable, perhaps you won't mind.
Previous owners bought this mandola from Bay Area avant garde composer Elliott Sharp, who has included electric mandolins and mandolas in numerous compositions and film soundtracks. Evidence suggests Elliott knew a good instrument when he saw one. Gig bag included. See more photos, call 425/772-0231, or for more information. $1,050.
