Rigel
Rigel A Plus Deluxe, tobacco sunburst. $1,800.
Sweet-sounding acoustic/electric mandolin, plays very smoothly like all Rigels. Responsive and fast, with an strong, open voice.
This Rigel bears serial number 2005 on a red label marked Hyde Park, Vermont. Thus it dates from 2003 or so, when Rigel had expanded to a six-person shop.
It may be 20 years old but it's in very good condition, with only light player wear. Features figured Vermont rock maple back and sides—you might not know this, but what makes Rigels different is that the sides are carved, not bent. Adirondack spruce top, figured maple neck with ebony center strip and graphite reinforcing rod, compound-radiused ebony fretboard with dot inlays, Loar-style adjustable bridge, and proprietary Rigel internal piezo pickup. Jumbo frets are in good shape with no grooves. Tobacco sunburst finish. Gold-plated hardware including Grover tuners and 1-piece downhook tailpiece. Original hardshell rectangular TKL-style tweed case.
New from Rigel, an A Plus Deluxe costs $2,695. This one can be yours for significantly less. I still esteem Rigels as the finest acoustic/electric mandolins ever built. See more photos, call 425/772-0231, or more information. 48-hour approval period. $1,800 plus shipping.
