Bacorn
Roger Bacorn 2008 5-string electric. $1,800.
Here’s a high-quality 5-string built in 2008 by Roger Bacorn in upstate New York. Mahogany Les Paul–style body, beautiful curly maple top with light tobacco sunburst finish. Mahogany neck with ebony fretboard. Nut width 1.36 inches; scale length 14.25 inches. Kent Armstrong jazz pickup for warmth and clarity. Hand-machined, solid brass compensated stud bridge/tailpiece; tone and volume controls.
It has been very well kept and has only light player wear. Bacorn solidbody mandolins are no longer available from the builder, who has kept a low profile since his shop was flooded in 2011. Tragically, his output was very small, but the build quality is high and the tone is outstanding. (And where are you going to get another one?) $1,800 plus shipping. Hardshell case included.
