Niles' main axe is a Gibson F4, which he frequently plays through a pickup. He also owns a Fender electric. He has made several recordings, and has written extensively on mandolin techniques. As an affordable alternative to buying an electric mandolin, Niles recommends converting a miniature electric guitar to mandolin tuning, as pictured here. Niles has two instructional book/tape sets that deal with electric mandolin playing: Twin Mandolin Method and The Electric Mandolin. These are available from Niles himself or from Elderly Instruments.
